Recognizing a gap in string music education across schools in Sierra Vista and neighboring communities, the Cochise County Youth Orchestra was founded in January 2002 with just six students. Today, the ensemble—dedicated exclusively to string instruments such as violins, violas, cellos, and string basses—has grown significantly in size and musical range. Over the years, it has embraced a diverse repertoire that includes classical, old-time fiddle, western swing, jazz, Celtic, and contemporary popular music. This variety not only keeps performances exciting but also allows orchestra members to explore and master different playing techniques across musical genres.

“A youth orchestra is the perfect metaphor for society: all voices, different and essential, working in harmony.”

Leonard Bernstein

American Composer, Conductor
